Chard and I got together for a 2k point game over the weekend – this is about the smallest point value game we’ve played this far (we like to keep things epic) but to make up for it we’re playing on our revitalised gaming boards with new scenery, and I’m sticking to my ‘painted-only’ mantra to keep things looking reasonable. Chard has also done a good amount of work on his tanks of late so things are starting to look a little neater on the tabletop. Unfortunately the one thing I lack is a decent light source in my dining room so the pictures are probably still a little lack. Hey ho…
My list included:
Maugan-Ra (thought I’d give him a crack)Farseer on Jetbike, Singing Spear (Guide, Fortune, Mind War pfff)
Guardians x 10, Warlock, Wave Serpent w/holofields, lasers, cannon
Rangers x 6
Rangers x 5
Jetbikes x 3, cannon
Jetbikes x 3, cannon
Wraithguard x 5, D-Scythes, Wave Serpent w/holofields, lasers, cannon
Fire Dragons x 6, Exarch w/firepike and fast shot
Swooping Hawks x 6
Crimson Hunter w?Exarch upgrade
Fire Prism w/holofield
War Walkers x 3 w/scatter lasers
Chard brought a fairly standard list for him – lots of infantry, vendettas x 2 with veterans, Marbo, Leman Russ, Demolisher, 2 hellhounds, 1 chimera
Mission: Crusade + The Relic
I’m just going to write an overview for this one and post a few pictures, as it was quite one-sided after a decent start by the guard…
Terrain and Deployment:
Everyone shuffles about a bit on both sides. Maugan-Ra snipes the astropath and kills another comman squad guy. He and the fire dragons rush forward and the Exarch knocks a hull point off the demolisher. One wave serpent knocks a hull point off a hellhound while the other performs somewhat better by wiping out a heavy weapons squad. The war walkers kill 7 infantry, despite them going to ground in terrain, who then break and run off the table. In the IG turn both leman russ and demolisher miss completely, although the multi melta on one hellhound manages to down the wraithguard serpent!
Fire dragons hull out the demolisher (oddly enough, Maugan-Ra failes to split fire and thanks to rending also strips 2 hull points from the tank!) Both jetbike squads arrive and drive around aimlessly on the left flank. The fire prism manages to hit the chimera at last and immobilises it, while the wraithguard charge and wreck a hellhound (I found out later that as their transport was destroyed last turn they could not legally do this!). Hawks drop behind the guard lines and kill a bunch of guardsmen with their grenade packs. Meanwhile the walkers reliably wipe out another 10-man infantry squad. In their turn the IG successfully wipe out the wraithguard and hawks with a torrent of plasma and melta. Marbo turns up and throws his demo charge at the walkers, but they somehow shrug off the damage.
The spear-wielding farseer proves he’s not all talk by knocking a hull point off the surviving hellhound and then charging in to wreck it! Everyone else gets to work on the infantry squads, rapidly whittling them down. In the IG turn Maugan-Ra tanks just about everything thrown at him now that there’s not much AP2 left on the guards’ side of the table, the plasma guns do pick off a couple fo his fire dragon bodyguard. Guardians bale out of the surviving serpent and start rending away…
The fliers all come on, and while the crimson hunter wipes out a few autocannon guys he is quickly shot down by the vendettas. Other assorted shooting goes on, mostly of guardsmen by shurikens…
Just about everything else dies to overwhelming space hairdresser power! Oh, except the Farsser, who is laid low by vendetta overkill. I suppose that’ll teach him to pop tanks like a boss…:-(
I’m not too sure what the final points were, though with only a single surviving guardsmen it was a comfortable Eldar victory…
Some things of note:
- War walkers were probably MVP yet again. Not only are they reliably going to gouge chunks out of anything they’re aimed at, but in this game they also proved tougher than wet paper!
- No matter how pretty you think your crimson hunter is, he’s going to bite the dust in short order – do whatever it takes to keep him out of harm’s way.
- Maugan-Ra can tank like a Hank and kick the odd butt with his boomstick, who knew?! All for the same low low cost as an Avatar…hmmmm…
- Guardians cannot take a warlock and then ride around in a shrouded wave serpent for 2+ cover save. Conceal/reveal does not work on the transport! Fortunately I checked up on this before the game and so didn’t attempt it. My warlock took destructor/renewer instead and failed it every time.
- Despite mathematically hitting in 2 out of 3 shots, fire prisms will give in to performance envy and only land 1 hit per game…
